Turmeric and its different uses

 Turmeric (Curcuma) has been in the news over the last few years. It surprised many Asians when the news about Turmeric's health benefits came into the limelight overnight. Their Kitchen never ran out of turmeric or missed any curries or dishes that they made. They were using this wonderful spice in their cooking every single day with its hidden health benefits. Like any other Asian, I have grown up using Turmeric not only in cooking but in many different ways. Here is a list of different ways Turmeric can be used other than cooking giving more or less the same health benefits

1) Wounds or burns: any time anyone in my family gets hurt or burn fingers while cooking, the first thing my dad would say from that corner is to apply turmeric powder or its paste. Such is the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric to heal wounds or burns and gives sudden relief

2) Anti-Cancerous: Although many research articles talk about its anti-cancer properties, human trials have not been conducted convincingly and so it's too early to conclude it. However, it's usage in small quantities for longer periods have been quoted in a few research articles to be a factor for fewer cancer patients in Asia/India (an average Indian consumes Turmeric every day in their dishes/food in small quantities)

3) Minimize Contagious disease spread: We all know that chickenpox or the Varicella virus is highly contagious. Now, a tiny trick to avoid its crazy invasion is to sprinkle turmeric powder along with neem leaves which certain tribes practice even today to minimize the spread of contagious infections

4) Cures mouth-ulcers: a piece of fresh raw coconut dipped in turmeric powder is a practice followed in Indian households to cure mouth ulcers. This could avoid a visit to a doctor and it's a natural remedy to cure mouth-ulcers

5) Cures Common Cold and Cough: A common practice in my house is to boil a glass of milk with turmeric, honey, and ginger. It not only gives a relief to the throat but its use for 2-3 days cures the cold and cough

5) Face Pack: turmeric powder or freshly ground paste mixed with milk or yogurt and massaging once it dries remove dead skin. Repeat it twice a week to get bright looking skin. Please note that turmeric leaves yellowish color after application which may or may not wash off with a single wash.

6) Hair-growth: Another practice followed by Indian women in certain parts of the country, is to apply turmeric on side locks and cleft which is believed to stop hair growth. It is also applied on heels (Acupressure point) but with no scientific proof. This practice is followed almost every day before the bath and washed off during the shower. Hopefully, women continue to take care of themselves in these simple self-care practices

Please note that although Turmeric has good health benefits, its over-usage has also been proved to have side effects. However, as mentioned above, its usage in moderate amounts over a long period (which is the practice in India) has been proven to have its health benefits.
